Are All TMR Keyboards Compatible with Mechanical Switches?

You may find all Akko TMR keyboards can support the mechanical switches and magnetic switches, so all tmr keyboards can achieve it? Many users have a misunderstanding that TMR keyboards are generally compatible with mechanical switches. Actually, this is not the case. In most cases, TMR keyboards are NOT compatible with mechanical switches. Akko's dual compatibility is a deliberate feature rather than a standard one.

Why Are TMR Keyboards Compatible (or Not) with Mechanical Switches?

Technical Support for Compatibility

Hall effect keyboards usually need a sensor placed directly under each switch. The sensor must align vertically with the magnet to detect changes in the magnetic field. This design takes up the same PCB space that mechanical switch contacts normally use, which makes mechanical compatibility difficult.

TMR technology is more flexible. TMR keyboard use a flat layout that does not require vertical alignment. This frees up space on the PCB, allowing room for both the sensor and mechanical switch contacts. As a result, mechanical switch compatibility becomes possible.

Design Differences Cause Incompatibility

Technical support does not automatically translate into real product capability. Actual compatibility depends on whether the manufacturer has deliberately engineered a hybrid design.

MagMech:  Compatible with Magnetic Switches and Mechanical Switches Benefits

When we launched our first TMR keyboard, we introduced the compatibility design, and we called it as MagMech. This feature easily brings two different typing experiences into a single keyboard.

TMR keyboards with mechanical switch compatibility are more than just an additional option. They offer practical benefits across multiple areas, including customizable typing feel, cost efficiency, functional flexibility, and long-term durability.

1. A Flexible Typing Experience for Work and Play

This compatibility design lets users enjoy both gaming performance and typing comfort in a single keyboard.

  • Magnetic switches are smooth and linear, with fast actuation and no tactile bump. They are ideal for competitive gaming that requires quick reactions and precise movement, such as VALORANT and CS2. However, they offer less feedback during long typing sessions.
  • Mechanical switches provide more variety in feel, tactile switches provide the clear feedback for accurate typing, and the clicky switches provide audible click for a classic mechanical feel.

Previously, users had to choose between gaming performance and typing feel. With a compatible TMR keyboard, both can be used in one device—magnetic switches for gaming-focused keys, and mechanical switches for typing areas, depending on preference.

2. Cost Efficiency

This compatibility design also delivers clear cost benefits. Magnetic switches are generally more expensive than mechanical switches. With a hybrid setup, users can allocate magnetic switches only to key gaming positions while using more affordable mechanical switches for the rest of the keyboard.

This approach helps maintain high performance where it matters most, while keeping overall cost under control—achieving a practical balance between performance and budget.

3. Customization

For keyboard enthusiasts, this compatibility design unlocks a new level of customization. Users can freely mix different switch types, within a single keyboard, creating unique layouts tailored to different needs or aesthetics.

This high level of flexibility turns a TMR-compatible keyboard from a simple tool into something more personal and engaging—both a functional device and a platform for customization and expression.

Final Thoughts

In the past, choosing a mechanical keyboard meant accepting a fixed feel and actuation style. Choosing a magnetic switch keyboard meant committing to a linear experience. Technology defined the category, and users had to adapt.

With TMR compatibility, feel and performance are no longer tightly linked. Users can separate them.

Magnetic switches can be used in gaming areas for fast response and precise control. Mechanical switches can be used in typing areas for tactile feedback and confirmation. There is no need to choose one over the other.

However, not all TMR keyboards on the market offer this compatibility. Please confirm the product specifications before purchase.
